Idaho Falls is the county seat for Bonneville County and is also Idaho’s largest city except for Boise’s metropolitan area. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.80 square miles, which is 22.35 square miles of land and only 0.45 square miles of water.

Why is Idaho Falls a Great Place to Live?

The city is eastern Idaho’s cultural, commercial, and healthcare hub, which extends into sections of southern Montana and western Wyoming. Founded in 1864 and incorporated in 1891, it grew from a population of 56,813 as of the 2010 Census to an estimate in 2018 of 61,535 and a metro population of 133,265. It, therefore, gives great opportunities for employment and a wonderful selection of neighborhoods in which to live and enjoy numerous amenities.

 

Attractions

The city attracts tourists visiting nearby Jackson Hole, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, and those who want to fish on the Snake River. It was named to National Geographic’s list of “100 Best Adventure Towns.”

The Museum of Idaho showcases history, local artifacts and brings in major traveling exhibits such as “Bodies: The Exhibition.“Gutenberg Bibles, dinosaur bones, Titanic remnants, and others.

An extensive River Walk features hiking and running trails, art installations, and other points of interest along several miles of the Snake River that flows through the center of the city.

Downtown Idaho Falls – The historic downtown district is on several blocks of the original townsite that goes along the east side of the river. It features locally-owned shops, plazas, galleries, theaters, cultural amenities, restaurants, and has plans for future revitalization. The Willard Arts Center, the Civic Auditorium, and the Colonial Theatre host plays, musical concerts, and a variety of events.

 

Major Industries and Businesses

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is a laboratory of the United States Department of Energy. It is on a complex in the high desert of eastern Idaho and employs approximately 4,000 people. Along with other research, its main history has involved nuclear research for peaceful application. Different organizations have built over 50 reactors including ones that gave the world the first usable electricity by using nuclear power as well as the world’s first nuclear submarine’s power plant. These facilities are the world’s largest concentration of reactors.

Melaleuca is a billion-dollar enterprise doing business in 17 countries. It has become one of North America’s largest online and catalog retailers and the Northwest’s largest manufacturer of consumer packaged goods where over a million people shop every month. Known as “The Wellness Company,” it improves health with world-class wellness products, nutrients, supplements, functional foods, and other breakthrough innovations; improves the environment with home-cleaning products that are non-toxic and require less water to manufacture, less fuel when shipping, and less plastic in their packaging; and improves finances with a step-by-step plan that has shared more than 3.6 billion dollars with those who refer friends to shop.

 

Schools and Colleges

There are eight public high schools, 26 public elementary schools, four public middle schools, four public charter schools, and three private schools. Higher education is offered by the College of Eastern Idaho, that area’s only community college. University Place is a unique satellite campus for dual enrollment in Idaho State University and the University of Idaho and boasts high-tech facilities such as the Center for Advanced Energy Studies. Stevens-Henager College and the University of Phoenix have local resource centers to aid students in online degree programs.
