What Is Stress?

Stress is a condition wherein a person feels overwhelmed and unable to cope with emotional or mental feelings. It may involve fight or flight syndrome and a person may feel that they have no other choice but to fight out the situation, or to flee. It can cause a person to feel like they are locked in a very small room and helpless, it can cause a person to hyperventilate, it can create a sensation that you can’t breathe. There are many physical manifestations of stress that the body can feel.

How Does Stress Affect Mental Health?

Stress can create anxiety and depression. Both of these can rapidly become mental health issues if left unchecked. It’s normal to feel anxiety or depression periodically in life. The death of a loved one for example would create a short-term depression for many, the anxiety of an uncertain future would create anxiety. These are examples of how stress, left untreated, can create long-term mental health issues and deprive a person of the life that they love.
